Program content

  • A placement of international students in Senegalese host families for a full cultural immersion
  • Meals and snacks (Special meals for vegetarians will be provided)
  • recruitment of local English speaking university students who will participate as interpreters and learning peers
  • Cross cultural orientation, followed by a visit of the museum of African Art/ Théodore Monod
  • Guided discovery tours of Dakar (University of Dakar, Monument of African Renaissance, Presidential Palace, Independence square, Sandaga Market), Saint-Louis ( a UNESCO Cultural heritage site (colonial architecture), Goree Island ( visit of historic sites, museums and arts galleries). Prior to the beginning of Service learning, students will also spend a day in a different ecovillage to see different socio-economic realities and initiatives.
  • Academic lectures on the four dimension of ecovillages (ecology, culture economy and social), on French and Wolof languages. Depending on participants’ learning objectives of participants, lectures will cover history, politics, economy, gender issues, arts, religion, traditional and modern education and health systems. These courses will be given by university teachers, experts and community leaders.
  • Three weeks after beginning of the semester, students will spend 5 discovery days in the community where their service learning will take place to get familiar with community and assess local needs. In Dakar they will research and strategize around project.
  • A three week hands on, experiential service learning on an ecovillage project (According to the local needs and students’ interests they will be divided in teams to work on projects
  • In country transportation will be provided. (Pick up from airport, tours and transportation to and from villages will be organized)
  • Participants make regularly presentations on various local issues in their different courses.
  • Students will produce weekly reflection papers on their experiences, challenges and discoveries.
  • Each student will produce a separate 15 page research paper on a specific topic from a choice of three. To be handed in before two weeks before end of semester.
  • Dance classes may be organized but the costs will be on participants
  • Evaluations will take place at the end of the semester.

Program content

Each program will include:

  • a placement of international students in Senegalese host families – meals and snacks (Special meals for vegetarians will also be provided)

  • a visit of Saint-Louis, a UNESCO Cultural heritage site (colonial architecture) – shopping afternoon day
  • Transportation (pick up from airport and transportation in the country will be provided)
