The Sahel, also known as the Sahelian acacia savanna, is a semi-arid biogeographical region in Africa that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, between the Sahara Desert to the north and the Sudanian savannas to the south. The Sahel is a transitional zone between two more extreme environments, and is made up of flat, barren plains that stretch roughly 3,300 miles across Africa.
